The Case of Bartholomew’s Vessel
The room in the basement of the New England estate smelled of ozone and damp plaster, a scent Cat and Ali knew all too well. On a wooden table near the center of the room sat the object that had brought them out in the dead of winter: a vintage composition doll dressed in a heavy houndstooth coat, a thick wool scarf, and a blue patterned bonnet tied tightly around a cracked, painted head.
To an untrained eye, the doll looked merely antique, if a bit worn, with blue ink scribbled across its painted cheeks like jagged scars. But Ali refused to step within five feet of it. The moment she had walked into the room, her hand flew to her protection pendant, her eyes widening as she pressed her back against the doorframe.
"It’s not a child," Ali whispered, her voice tight with strain. "Cat, it’s pretending. It wants us to think it’s harmless."
Cat took a digital voice recorder from her coat pocket and set it on the table next to the doll. She pressed record. "Case entry, December 14th," Cat spoke clearly, her tone calm and deliberate. "We are investigating the residence of the Miller family. The subject is a 1930s composite doll acquired at an estate sale six weeks ago. Since its arrival, the family has experienced severe infesting phase activity unexplained drops in temperature, the sound of heavy boots walking down the upper hallway, and dark, oppressive feelings of dread."
Cat leaned forward, placing her hands on the edge of the table. "What is your name?"
Silence hung heavy in the basement. The air grew so cold that Cat’s breath bloomed into pale mists before her.
Then, the audio levels on the recorder spiked violently into the red.
A low, grating sound echoed not from the speaker, but from the wooden table itself, like fingernails dragging across pine. The doll’s stiff, fabric-wrapped legs seemed to shift a fraction of an inch forward on the wood. Its pale, glassy blue eyes, fixed in a perpetual sideways glance, seemed to catch the overhead bulb's glare in a way that made them look alive.
"Bartholomew," Ali gasped, her psychic intuition catching the dark shadow hanging over the object. "His name was Bartholomew. He died in the mid-1800s, but what’s attached to this vessel... Cat, it’s using his name as a mask."
Ali described the vision forcing its way into her mind: a cold, desolate road in Victorian England, a man freezing in a heavy coat, and the dark, inhuman presence that had seized upon his final, bitter thoughts. The entity had latched onto the doll decades later, using its sweet, unassuming form to gain entry into homes, feeding on the fear of whoever took it in. The blue ink markings on its face weren't child's play; the family's youngest daughter had frantically scribbled over its head in an attempt to "blind" it after seeing the doll standing at the foot of her bed in the dark.
"It moves when no one is looking," Cat noted into the recorder, her eyes never leaving the figure. "The owner reported finding it positioned near the front door every morning, fully upright, as if waiting for someone to open it."
Without warning, the microphone on the recorder cut out with a sharp, static pop. The yellow ribbons tied beneath the doll's chin twitched, dropping limply as the temperature in the room plunged further. A terrible, heavy pressure settled onto Cat’s chest, the classic sign of an entity attempting to exert dominance over the room.
Cat didn't flinch. She reached into her kit, pulled out a small glass spray bottle of consecrated salt water and sage oil, and misted the air above the table.
"You have no authority here," Cat declared firmly, her voice echoing through the basement.
A sharp, violent crack vibrated through the room, like wood snapping under immense pressure. The doll didn't move, but the heavy, suffocating atmosphere evaporated instantly, leaving only the stale smell of old attic dust behind. The entity had retreated back inside the vessel, dormant, but waiting.
Cat carefully picked up the doll using a thick linen cloth, ensuring her bare skin never made contact with the fabric, and placed it inside a dark, lined case.
"This one doesn't go back on a shelf," Cat said quietly, securing the latches. "This one stays locked away with us."
